Description
This is a mid-19th century former Nonconformist Chapel located on Wyndham Street East, Stonehouse, Plymouth. It is a landmark building within a planned neighbourhood centred around Wyndham Square.
The chapel is constructed of coursed and random rubble stone with stucco detailing to the front, and render to the side and rear elevations. It has a gabled slate roof. The plan is rectangular, orientated north to south, and includes a basement and two storeys.
The symmetrical north front features a pedimented entrance of three bays. The central doorway is flanked by two tall windows, all with round-arched openings featuring moulded and keyed arches on moulded imposts. Above the central doorway is a window with Tuscan half-columns, a moulded and patterned entablature, and a dentilled cornice. A shallow flight of stone steps leads to the doorway. Original hornless sash windows with glazing bars remain throughout. The west elevation has windows at ground and gallery level, and window and door openings leading to the basement. The east elevation is plain with no openings, while the rear has a double door entrance accessed via a modern metal staircase, and two blocked straight-headed windows.
The interior retains few original features. The galleries and pews have been removed. A timber staircase leads to the basement, which contains three rows of cast iron columns supporting the floor above. Some modern supporting structures have been added.
A low boundary wall runs along Wyndham Road, and the chapel is approached by a flight of five steps. A section of wall at the north-east corner may represent the remains of a demolished building, with a stone corbel supported on a moulded bracket towards the top. The building was formerly known as Wyndham Hall.
