Description
The former fire station, now used as a canteen and offices, was built in 1851. It is constructed from squared limestone rubble with a granite plinth and cills, limestone dressings, ridge stacks, and a slate roof. The building consists of three parallel rectangular blocks, with the outer blocks set forward.
The exterior is two-storey with a three-bay central block and single-storey, three-bay outer blocks. It features a tooled plinth and sills, a plat band on the central block, moulded stone sills with a blocking course, and coped pediments on each block. The central block has segmental-arched outer doorways, although the central section has been altered and rendered in the mid-20th century. There is a first-floor rusticated tripartite window and an oculus in the pediment. The left-hand block has an altered carriage opening, while the right-hand block features a central rusticated segmental-arched window that is partly blocked, along with outer flat-headed windows. The north side has eared plat surrounds to 6/6-pane sashes. The rear elevation is plainer, with segmental-arched ground-floor openings. Hoppers are inscribed with "VR".
Inside, the building has been altered in the mid-20th century and lacks features of special interest. Historically, the central block contained stables, and the left-hand block housed fire engines. This fire station was part of the mid-19th century expansion of the South Yard, and fire engine houses were a significant feature of the naval dockyards.
