Description

Ham House is a farmhouse that was later transformed into a country house, and more recently served as a library, a care home, and flats. It was built in 1639 for Robert Trelawney, a merchant from Plymouth, and underwent alterations in 1739 and the late 19th century. During these later changes, most of the windows were replaced in a style that matched the original, and extensions were added to the rear. The building is constructed of rendered rubble with original granite dressings and 19th-century freestone dressings, topped with steep dry slate roofs featuring slightly projecting eaves and verges, along with barge boards that have central pendants. The structure has a U-shaped plan with a T-plan wing at the rear right.

The exterior consists of two storeys and has a façade with a 1:2:1 window arrangement. The central doorway is original, moulded, and round-arched, featuring a date, carved spandrels, and a hoodmould. Flanking the doorway are original two-light mullioned windows, with two-light 19th-century transomed windows above. A full-width porch between the wings is supported by paired Tuscan columns at either end. The left-hand wing has three-light windows, while the other wing features four-light windows, all from the 19th century and equipped with hoodmoulds. Similar windows can be found on the side elevations. At the rear of the left-hand side, there is an 18th-century Venetian window with moulded cornices and leaded glazing.
