Description
A farmhouse, now divided into two separate houses, Brown Rock Cottage and Brown Rock House. Brown Rock Cottage dates back to the 17th century, with Brown Rock House added in the mid-18th century, and subsequently altered. The buildings are constructed of rubble, with double Roman tile roofs. Brown Rock Cottage has brick and stone gable stacks on its left side, while Brown Rock House has brick and large limestone quoins, raised coped verges, and brick gable stacks.
Brown Rock Cottage is two storeys high with four windows. These are 20th-century 2-light casements, irregularly placed. A glazed door is located second from the left. A small single-light window is visible on the left return at first-floor level; remnants of timber suggest possible former attic lights.
Brown Rock House is taller, also two storeys high, with three windows – 16-pane sash windows with timber lintels. The central door is a 6-panelled door with a flat wooden hood supported by brackets. A carved stone shield of arms is set above the door, and there is a plinth below. Earlier windows were formerly located to the left and right at ground and first-floor levels; the fenestration was altered in the early 19th century. The right return has a blank gable end. The rear of Brown Rock House features a lower, two-storey wing on the right, with a 20th-century plate-glass window on both ground and first floors. The gable end of this wing has a 2-light casement at ground floor and a large 6-pane light above, both 20th-century. A small lean-to is situated in the angle. A 20th-century brick lean-to with a half-glazed door is located to the left. The rear of the main house has a round-headed window at upper level, featuring Y-tracery, leaded lights, and a brick head. The interiors were not inspected.
