Description
Clifton Lodge, including the archway, flanking walls, and a section of the estate wall to the south, was built around 1885-86. It features coursed, squared rubble with freestone dressings, and the roofs are hidden behind embattled parapets with rubble and freestone stacks. The design is asymmetrical and reflects a Tudor Gothic style.
In the center, there is a 4-centred archway with a ribbed vault and carved bosses. Above this archway is a three-light oriel window with cusped tracery, flanked by niches containing statues of knights. The structure has a stepped and embattled parapet displaying the Smyth arms.
On either side of the archway, there are canted, three-storey towers topped with embattled parapets that are corbelled out on cusped arcaded plates. The ground floor features square windows with chamfered surrounds, while the upper floors have four-centre headed windows. A moulded string course adorned with gargoyles runs along the towers.
To the south of the left section, there is a projecting square bay and a stair turret, followed by a two-storey, single bay wing. To the north of the right section, a five-stage polygonal tower includes single cusped ogee lights, with a two-storey, single bay wing beyond it.
Flanking each lodge are rubble quadrant walls approximately 5-6 yards long, ending in square, embattled piers. To the south, a section of wall extends about 50 yards, constructed of rubble with freestone dressings and coping. This wall steps down at intervals where square piers are located and features decorative cast-iron railings. Clifton Lodge serves as a lodge for the Ashton Court estate.
