Description
Portbury House and the attached stable and barn range is a farmhouse dating from the mid-18th century, with alterations and additions made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of rubble with limestone dressings, partly rendered, and features brick slate roofs with stone and brick gable stacks. The farmhouse is designed in an L-shape, with the stable and barn forming a rear courtyard.
The structure is two storeys high and has four windows, all of which are sash windows with raised surrounds, stepped voussoirs, and keystones. The second bay from the left features a Doric porch with a cornice and blocking course, leading to a six-panelled door with an overlight and a plain surround that has a pendant keystone. The front also has a parapet and coping.
The right side of the building has a rendered gable end and the rear wall of the attached barn. The left side includes a lower two-storey rear wing with three sash windows that have gauged brick segmental heads and brick surrounds, along with a central 20th-century door topped with a triangular hood supported by wooden piers.
At the rear, the right side of the wing has a gable end and features a two-storey flat-roofed 20th-century addition on the inner side, as well as a single-storey addition at the back with two and a half-glazed doors and a 20th-century window. The inner side of the rear wing has two 20th-century plate-glass ground floor windows. The main range's rear includes a catslide roof over a two-light casement window and a panelled and glazed door, with a 20th-century two-light casement window under the eaves to the right.
Attached to the left is an L-shaped range that includes the stable and barn, which is rendered and features two cart entries, a stable door, and a two-light casement window with segmental heads. There are also two similar loading doors above. The range to the left has two stable doors with segmental heads, a similar loading door to the left, and a lean-to at the gable end that includes a 20th-century garage entry, topped with a weathervane on the ridge.
