Description
The entrance lodge, walls, piers, gates, and railings at Portishead Burial Ground date from the mid-19th century. The lodge is constructed from snecked limestone rubble with stone dressings and features a plain and fish-scale tiled roof adorned with wrought iron crestings and finials on the gables. It has limestone piers along with cast iron railings and gates. The open lodge has a front gable end with a high pointed arched opening, which includes roll-moulded, polished granite jamb-shafts with composite capitals. There are lancet windows on each side, and the gates are designed with twisted uprights and spear finials.
On the left and right sides, there are glazed sections with five lights each, the central light being taller and trefoil-headed with a small gable above. The rear of the lodge mirrors the front but lacks jamb shafts or gates, featuring plainer mouldings. The structure has a limestone plinth and quoins, and a bellcote set diagonally on the roof ridge with louvres and a bellcast shape roof.
Attached to each side of the lodge are walls that sweep around to square piers, which are about 3 meters high and made of vermiculated ashlar with triangular tops. The walls, approximately 0.5 meters high, extend about 80 meters to the east, stepping to accommodate the slope of the ground, and feature plain railings with principals that have curved struts and knob finials. At the eastern end, there is a pair of similar gate piers with a small gate that has knob finials on the uprights and a horizontal strut. The wall and railings continue about 90 meters to the southwest, leading to a similar terminal pier. The southwest and east boundaries of the burial ground are marked by plain railings only.
