Description

Detached farmhouse, dating from the early 17th century, with 19th-century additions to the rear. Constructed of ironstone rubble, with a hipped tiled roof featuring stone eaves courses. The roof has two stacks projecting from the rear wall; these are stone to the eaves and brick above, each with three shafts set diagonally and overhanging caps. Originally the house was rectangular, consisting of three main rooms, with a projecting gabled stair tower at the rear. A 19th-century rear wing extends to the right, incorporating the remains of a 17th-century cottage. A 19th-century lean-to extends along the rear wall. The main front elevation has three added brick buttresses. A 20th-century stone porch sits between two of these buttresses, with a stone slate lean-to roof. The doorway has a four-centred arch flanked by narrow stone windows. The ground floor has three four-light stone mullioned windows with lead lights, each with a label mould. The first floor has four similar windows. The rear wing has stone and brick walls and a tiled roof with stone eaves courses. It includes two brick stacks, one of which has been rebuilt. One storey and attic comprise the wing. A passage allows access through the wing near the main house. A ledged door provides entry. The ground floor of the wing has three 20th-century metal windows. Two hipped dormers are present in the attic, each with matching windows. Inside, the entrance hall includes two plank and muntin partitions, one of which has been re-set, with doorways having four-centred arches. A four-centred arched doorway leads from the rear into the later lean-to, with a similar blocked doorway from the lean-to into the stair tower. The left ground floor room features a large four-centred arched stone fireplace; a small cupboard in the adjoining wall is ventilated into the fireplace. The centre room contains remains of a plank and muntin partition. The right-end room, the kitchen, has a segmental-arched stone fireplace and a four-centred arched doorway. A stone spiral staircase leads to the first floor and the attic. The main first-floor rooms have restored 17th-century ornamental plaster ceilings, decorated with rose, crown, and fleurs de lys motifs. The left room has a carved oak 17th-century draught lobby and a four-centred arched stone fireplace. A similar fireplace is found in the right-end room. The attic has two fireplaces with timber lintels. The rear wing retains features including a stack with a large open fireplace, a spiral stair, and chamfered spine beams with run-out stops – all dating from the 17th century. The house was under repair at the time of a 1984 survey.
