Description

The Manor House is a medieval manor house, possibly dating from the 13th century, with later additions from 1664, 1695, and further modifications in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. It is constructed of ashlar and squared rubble, featuring gable-ended roofs that are stone slated, along with stone stacks positioned in various locations. The building has two storeys and attics, with the southeast front displaying a six-window range. The windows are mainly 2 and 3-light, featuring 17th-century stone mullions and some with transoms, and many have returned labels.

There is a two-storey porch with a doorway that has a four-centred head and an achievement of arms above it. The house has projecting gabled wings on both the left and right sides. Inside, notable features include a niche with a two-centred chamfered head and surround, likely from the 13th century; a first-floor stone fireplace with a four-centred head; voussoirs from a possibly 13th-century opening; a ground-floor doorway from the 16th century with a moulded four-centred head and continuous jambs; reset 17th-century panelling; an 18th-century fireplace surround; and a 16th-century moulded plaster ceiling taken from Fiddleford Mill, which features geometric ribbing. The drawing room contains a recent copy of this ceiling. The high quality of the house places it at the top of the grade II* category.
