Description

Birkin House is a country house built in 1874 in an early Victorian, classical style. The house is constructed of grey brick with ashlar dressings and raised ashlar quoins, and has a slate roof with a parapet to the main block. There are brick stacks at the left end, where the main and service blocks join, and at the rear of the main block.

The main block features a heavy moulded dentil cornice at the base of the parapet, and a cornice moulding at first floor level. A central projecting bay is topped with a pediment. A single-storey porch with Tuscan columns supports an entablature and is topped with a balustraded parapet featuring corner urns. The porch contains a pair of raised panel doors beneath a solid tympanum with radiating flutes, housed within a moulded arch. To the left of the porch on the ground floor is one sash window with a moulded surround; there is no window to the right of the door. The first floor has three similar sash windows with bracketed cills.

To the left of the main block is a matching service range, also constructed of brick with ashlar dressings, but without a parapet. This range has a plain plat band at first floor level. The ground floor has two sash windows with glazing bars in moulded surrounds, alongside a small mezzanine window. The first floor features three sash windows in moulded surrounds, with bracketed cills. A lean-to addition extends from the left end.

Internally, the main rooms retain original enriched cornices, marble fireplace surrounds, and panelled doors with reeded architraves. A cut string staircase features turned balusters and a wreathed handrail. The house remains largely unaltered from its original Victorian design.
