Description
The gateway and curtain wall to the southeast of Captain's House in Portland date from the mid-16th century and were originally part of the main enclosure and access to the Castle. The structure is made of fine squared dressed stone and measures approximately 15 meters in length and 3.5 meters in height. The left end of the wall abuts Captain's House. At the right end, there is a pair of early plank gates set within a four-centred double-chamfered arch, which is flanked by blind cruciform arrow slits. Above the arch, a deep recessed square panel contains the Royal Arms of 1660, made of lead. To the right of the gateway, there is a straight joint in the masonry. The back of the wall is plain, and there is a surviving section of the former curtain wall with a moat.
