Description
18 Chettle is a house that may have a 16th-century core but is primarily from the late 18th century, with some mid-19th-century additions. The building features a mix of ashlar and rendered surfaces, topped with a slate roof. There are rendered octagonal stacks in various locations. The main part of the house is three storeys high, with attics and three bays, and has a 19th-century extension on the left side. The original design was symmetrical. It has twelve-pane sash windows on the lower floor and six-pane sashes on the upper floor. A central porch features an arch made up of two chamfered orders. The 19th-century extension includes two-storey canted bays designed in a Tudor style.
Inside, there is an 18th-century staircase with details similar to those found in Chettle House, featuring 16th-century wooden figures used as finials. There is also reset 16th and 17th-century panelling, which includes an overmantel adorned with strapwork decoration and caryatid pilasters.
