Description

These are two semi-detached houses, 78 and 80 Saint Andrews Road, dating from 1863 or shortly before. The architect was likely John Hicks of Dorchester, who sold the properties newly built that year; they were possibly constructed by local builder James Gerrard. The houses are built of hammer-dressed stone with a hipped slate roof and ashlar stacks on ashlar coping above the partition wall. They are two storeys and have attics. Each house has a range of sashes with pointed arches; the ground floor windows are paired and linked by relieving arches. Darker stone is used for every alternate voussoir of both relieving arches and the first-floor windows. Each house has one attic dormer with a tripartite pointed casement and elaborate bargeboards to the gable. Rear two-storey wings extend to either side, featuring double-pitched roofs with coped gables on kneelers. These include a range of pointed sashes, with a gable and cusped bargeboard above the attic floor of No. 80, while the attic floor of No. 78 has been rebuilt. The front doors are located within central porches with pointed arches. The rear elevation is three storeys high with a gabled central projection. The houses were once inhabited by Stephen Whetham, son of Sir Charles Whetham, a 19th-century Lord Mayor of London. Nos. 78 to 88 (even) form a group.
