Description
The Portman Chapel is a parish church, now a private chapel, built in 1745 with a late 19th-century vestry added. The exterior features rendered walls with rusticated stone quoins that form angle pilasters, and it has slate roofs with pedimented stone gables. The nave and chancel are undifferentiated, and there is a south vestry. The north wall includes two Palladian windows with stone architraves and glazing bars, although the westernmost window has part of its architrave missing. There is a blind Palladian window at the east end. The south wall has a round-headed window that blocks a former priest's door, flanked by Ionic columns and an entablature with a reeded frieze and paterae. The west doorway is also flanked by Ionic columns that support a segmental pediment above a panelled door. The west end features a wooden bell-cote with a clock beneath a lead-covered cupola.
Inside, notable features include a coved ceiling, fielded oak panels on the walls, an 18th-century painted plaster and wood reredos, and several 18th-century monuments.
