Description

Church House is a house dating from the 17th century or earlier. It is constructed of coursed rubble stone with a gable-ended, tiled roof, and has brick stacks on the gables and to the right of the front door. The house has a half H-shaped plan. It is two storeys high with attics, and has an irregular arrangement of windows. These windows contain mullions of 2, 3, and 4 lights, some with stone labels. The front door has a moulded, 4-centred head and continuous jambs. Internal features, as documented by the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments (RCHM), include a hall ceiling with intersecting, deeply chamfered beams with run-out stops, plank and muntin partitions, other 17th century panelling, an open fireplace with a timber bressummer, and a first floor fireplace with a moulded, 4-centred head and continuous jambs, as well as a first floor fireplace with chamfered stone and a 4-centred head. The building is described in the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments, Dorset, volume IV, page 81/2, entry number 4.
