Description
Nos 27 and 29 West Allington are late 18th century or early 19th century buildings made of red brick, featuring two storeys and forming an L-shaped block. The frontage of No 27 is set back and includes a parapet adorned with stucco pilasters and sunk stucco panels, both rectangular and lozenge-shaped. The doorway and ground floor windows are round-headed, set within sunk arched panels, and there is a screen wall with a pointed doorway. No 29, which is adjacent to the road, has a similar parapet. It features two elaborate mid-19th century shop windows with moulded pilasters that have capitals decorated with flowers, animals, and birds, along with foliated cast iron mullions. The fascia boards display scrollwork at the angles, and the section facing the road is embellished with a cresting of scroll work and a vine pattern. The rear of the building has sash windows with Gothick glazing bars and stained glass. Inside, there is a spiral cast-iron staircase and other contemporary fittings. The shopfront was reportedly built for a tailor in 1845 and has always been a local curiosity. Nos 17 to 35 (odd) form a group.
