Description

The farm buildings on the west side of the Cow Yard, located approximately 200 metres south of Godolphin House, date from the early 19th century. Originally designed as a shelter or cartshed, the structure incorporates an earlier wall and has been subdivided with a bull pen added. The building is constructed from granite rubble, coursed with snecks that follow the slope of the land, and features roughly-hewn granite monoliths along the front (east) side, with later granite rubble and granite dressings used for partial infilling. It has a hipped scantle slate roof and a long rectangular plan that includes the earlier rear wall, which was originally open at the front supported by granite monolith posts. There are cross walls behind some of the posts. A high-walled pen for a bull has been added to the left of the middle in front, adjoining a larger pen at the top end of the yard, which relates to another listed item. This building is part of a group of farm structures associated with Godolphin House. The older coursed west wall, against which this shelter was built, extends northwards to include the Cow Yard gate and connects to a larger yard behind Godolphin House. An ancient, slightly raised causeway of setts with granite kerb stones runs obliquely through the courtyard gate, originally leading to the back gate of Godolphin House, aligned with the screens passage. Along the back wall of the shelter and on its west side, there is a raised cobbled pavement that ends at a field gate to the south.
