Description
Lloyds Signal Station is a signal station that has been converted into a dwelling, built in 1872 by Messrs Fox of Falmouth. The building is constructed of masonry, covered with white masonry paint, and has an almost square plan with a canted bay on the south-east side. It stands 2 and a half storeys tall, featuring rectangular window openings, although the fenestration has been altered over time. The south-west side has three windows on the ground floor, while the north-west side includes a 20th-century porch and three windows. The projecting bay to the south-east has two storeys with three rectangular windows, along with a ground and first floor window on the left. Below the battlements of the bay, five small rectangular lookout windows face the sea, and there is a flat roof behind the battlements. The timber signal pole has been reduced in height.
Inside, the ground floor originally contained four rooms: two were used by the Direct Spanish Telegraph Company, one by the Lizard Signal Company, and one served as a waiting room. The telegraph office was located above. The signalman on the flat roof used the five small windows to observe vessels, communicating with them via semaphore. Ships would report their names and other details, which were then relayed to the telegraph room below and sent to the ships' owners and daily newspapers. This system allowed ships to receive orders without needing to dock at Falmouth, with over 1,000 ships using The Lizard Station each month by 1877. The interior was not inspected.
