Description
The Custom House in Hayle is a Grade II listed building, dated 1862. It is constructed of stone rubble, with the sides and back painted, and features pebbledash at the front along with a granite ashlar plinth. The roof is hipped and covered with asbestos slate, featuring projecting eaves and cast-iron ogee gutters. There are slurried scantle slate roofs over the side lean-tos.
The building has a rectangular plan with a two-storey central block and single-storey lean-tos at either end. It likely contains two principal rooms flanking a central hall, with a stair hall at the rear. The lean-tos may have been added later.
The exterior is symmetrical with a two-window south-west front and a central doorway. The plinth features corner rusticated quoin strips with alternating vermiculated quoins, and similar detailing surrounds the doorway. The date "1862" is carved into the lintel above the doorway, which has an incised compass points threshold stone. The right-hand opening has been enlarged to form a doorway, while the other window openings have plain rendered architraves. Each lean-to has a granite ashlar plinth and a large doorway at the front with double boarded doors. The right-hand lean-to features a level parapet front. The rear includes a central stair window and a loading doorway to the left, although all openings are currently boarded over.
The interior has not been inspected. In 1862, Hayle was granted a custom house with the authority to bond general merchandise, although this warrant was withdrawn seventeen years later. Information has been provided by Hayle Town Council.
