Description
Carnsew Gallery is a detached shop located at No. 42 Penpol Terrace in Hayle. It was formerly the butcher's shop of John Runnals and was built in 1893, designed by Sampson Hill of Redruth. The exterior features painted rubble side walls and a shop front adorned with glazed tiles, topped by a flat lead roof.
The building has a square-on-plan layout and is currently subdivided. The entrance is located on the left side of the shopfront, which has an unpierced masonry side wall. The shop is a single-storey structure with an unaltered two-light shop front, flanked by engaged columns that exhibit a Mannerist style with Ionic order in the upper tier. The doorway is situated within an open porch that is splayed on the right side.
The stall riser and end piers of the front are covered in glazed tiles, and there are terracotta panels featuring sheep's heads on the stall riser. Additionally, a tiled mural depicting a bull is present on the left wall of the porch. The original plate glass windows have rounded upper corners, and the glazed door includes an overlight. This shop was built in the front gardens of a pair of cottages, a practice that originated when the only shop in the area was the Harvey Emporium.
