Description

The Old Toll House is a late 19th-century toll house, now a cottage, originally serving a turnpike road. It is constructed of granite rubble with rusticated granite dressings, and has a scantle slate roof with projecting eaves and verges. A lateral stone external stack is located on the middle of the rear wall, topped by three diagonally set brick shafts. The building has a two-room plan, with a later lean-to addition to the right. An integral entrance porch is set diagonally across the left-hand corner and is constructed of granite with a weathered roof and a 20th-century ledged door. The south-east front has a regular two-window arrangement, featuring two-light casement windows. A left-hand gable end has ground and first-floor windows overlooking the road. The interior has not been inspected.
