Description
The building known as the shop premises occupied by Dowling and Bay, also referred to as 1666 House, is located on Fore Street in East Looe. This structure is believed to have originally been a merchant's house, with a later addition of a shop. The building features an inscription dating back to 1666. It has a rendered timber-frame construction with 20th-century mock timber-frame panels and a fairly steep asbestos slate roof. The layout is double-depth with a rear wing on the left side, and it stands three storeys tall with a regular two-window range.
On the second floor, there are rare 18th-century 18-pane horizontal-sliding sash windows with thick glazing bars. The first floor features taller early 19th-century 16-pane hornless sash windows. The ground floor includes a recessed 20th-century bowed shop front with small panes. Inside, the ground floor has 18th-century bowtell-moulded axial beams, although the rest of the interior has not been inspected.
