Description
1-12 Penrose Terrace is a terrace of twelve houses built in the early to mid-19th century. The houses are constructed from granite, with some stucco render, and have slate roofs. The terrace runs as a long, south-facing arrangement, stepping uphill from the east. The front elevation of number 8 is pebble-dashed, while numbers 9 and 10 are faced with granite rubble. Each house is two storeys high and has three window bays. Most have sash windows with glazing bars, and open porches supported by Doric columns and entablatures, although numbers 1, 2, 3, and 5 lack porches. Numbers 1 and 2 are being converted into an annexe of the Cliff Hotel, intended as residential apartments by February 2025. Number 11 features two late-19th century, two-storey splayed bay windows. Some of the rear elevations are finished with slate hanging. The interiors of all the houses are understood to contain historic joinery, including staircases with ramped handrails, window shutters, architraves, doors, and other fittings such as fire surrounds.
