Description

Oldhay Farmhouse is probably of 17th-century origin, although it has been altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is a stone farmhouse with large granite quoins and a slate roof with gable ends. The house has stone end stacks and projecting stone lateral stacks with set-offs and a cloam oven projection. The original layout is uncertain due to subsequent alterations; the rear wing has been shortened by approximately 2 metres. The overall plan is 'L' shaped, with the front range containing two rooms and a central entrance, and the wing to the left containing a further two rooms, both heated by side lateral stacks. A 19th-century outshut is located to the rear of the right-hand side, partly remodelled in the 20th century. The ground slopes down to the right, and there is a cellar beneath the right-hand room. The front elevation has three windows, appearing almost symmetrical, with dressed stone arches to the ground-floor openings. A 20th-century plank door is located near the centre, flanked by two 20th-century 2-light casements, with three similar casements above. The left-hand room and rear wing have 20th-century floor joists. The left-hand fireplace has a chamfered granite surround, and on the right is a second fireplace opening containing a flat horizontal slate slab pierced with two round holes, approximately 6 inches in diameter, and a small grate below. The fireplace in the room directly behind has chamfered granite jambs, and the fireplace in the rear room of the left-hand wing is partly blocked. The first floor was not inspected.
