Description
The harbour wharfs and piers, including two lighthouses, are significant structures located in the area. Smeaton's Pier, built between 1767 and 1770 and designed by John Smeaton, features an attractive squat lighthouse at its end. This lighthouse is made of coursed granite ashlar, has an octagonal shape on a large square plinth, a domed metal roof, and an iron railed balcony. It is primarily used as a lighthouse.
Smeaton's Pier was extended between 1888 and 1890, and at its head, there is a small octagonal lighthouse. The West Pier, constructed in 1894, was built to facilitate the shipping of roadstone from a local quarry. The listing also includes the harbour wharfs along the north and west sides of the harbour, as well as ramped walls and slipways.
