Description
This is a Celtic cross located about 1 metre west of the lych gate of the Church of St Morwenna in Morwenstow. Made of granite, the cross features approximately 50 centimetres of cross shaft and an alisee patee cross, which is carved with circles in relief on each arm and in the center. The truncated shaft is set on three granite steps. The Reverend R S Hawker is said to have brought the cross to Morwenstow in 1851 from the moor, where it may have served as a pilgrim cross, to commemorate his first wife, Charlotte. The shaft is also carved with the initials C E H. The cross is depicted in the Hawker memorial window within the church.
