Description
The signpost at Carclew Cross Roads is an early 20th-century cast iron structure. The lower part of its round shaft is embossed with the word "CORNWALL" in vertical lettering. Above this, the signpost features four adjustable pointers, which appear to be original and have rounded corners. These pointers are attached to the upper part of the shaft with bolted collars, sitting over a moulded cornice. Each collar is topped with a moulded ball and spear-headed finial. The northern pointer indicates Truro at 7 miles; the eastern pointer shows Mylor Bridge at 1¾ miles, Restronguet at 2 miles, and Mylor Harbour at 3½ miles; the southern pointer points to Comfort at 1¼ miles; and the western pointer directs to Penryn at 2¼ miles and Falmouth at 4¼ miles. This signpost is a notable example of early street furniture, highlighting the historical significance of well-marked transport routes for trade and travel.
