Description
Quilters is a cottage dating from the 18th century or early 19th century, constructed from whitewashed granite rubble with a grouted scantle slate roof featuring gable ends. The gable end stacks are made of dressed granite, with a granite dripcourse and weathered tops; the right-hand stack is notably large. The building has a two-room layout with a central entrance, where both rooms are heated by the gable end stacks, with the right-hand room serving as the kitchen. In the 20th century, the internal partitions and staircase were removed to create one large room, and a two-storey wing was added to the rear right.
The exterior is two storeys high and features an almost symmetrical two-window arrangement. It has small late 19th century or 20th century four-pane sash windows with slate cills. The central doorway includes a late 19th century or 20th century glazed and panelled door, accompanied by a 20th century open-fronted gabled porch. At the rear, there is a gable-ended two-storey wing added in the 20th century.
Inside, the ground floor of the original house is now a single large room. The fireplace at the right-hand end has chamfered granite jambs, one featuring a heart-shaped stop and the other a bar stop, likely reused from another house, with a rough timber lintel. A late 19th century iron range is inserted into this fireplace, and to the right of it is a bread oven with a cast-iron door inscribed "Terrill and Rogers, Makers, Redruth." The softwood ceiling joists have bead-moulded edges.
