Description
The walls at Place House are perimeter walls dating from the 15th and 16th centuries, with remodeling that occurred around 1840. They are constructed from killas rubble and granite ashlar, featuring dressed granite battlements that are ramped where there are changes in level. The walls include four-centred arched granite doorways: one is an original moulded doorway with carved spandrels and a square hoodmould leading to a pedestrian gate into Church Avenue, while the other is a 19th-century doorway with sunk spandrels providing access to a carriage entrance into Cobb Well Hill. These walls occupy a prominent position in the center of the old town.
