Description
This is a Bible Christian chapel and Sunday school, later used as a Methodist Church, built in 1828. It was constructed by Edward Hocken. The chapel is built of stone rubble with granite quoins, and is rendered on the front. It has a slate roof with hipped ends, and a brick stack in the rear hipped end. The building consists of an overall rectangular auditorium, with a rostrum at the opposite end, behind which is a folding wooden screen dividing the chapel from a small Sunday school. Beyond the Sunday school is a small carriage house which once housed a horse and trap. In the early 20th century, a porch was added to the front entrance. The porch has a slate hipped roof. The right-hand side of the building has two late 19th or early 20th century four-pane sash windows in altered openings, with yellow brick dressings. There is a 19th-century four-panel door leading to the Sunday school and double plank doors to the carriage house. The left-hand side wall features three late 19th or early 20th century four-pane sash windows with yellow brick dressings. The interior contains complete early 19th century furnishings, including low-pitched pine box pews, and a rostrum. A folding wooden plank screen separates the chapel from the Sunday school. The Sunday school has a 19th-century fireplace with a cast iron register grate. A circuit plan from 1863-4 is displayed on the wall.
