Description

SX 07 NW ST KEW ST KEW 5/194 Tombchest of John Carne lm to south - of south aisle of Church of St. James GV II Tombchest. 1709. In memory of John Carne, gent, who died in 1709. Ashlar stone chest with slate lid. Lid with incised panel with nowy-head at top and bottom and well engraved inscription in upper and lower case lettering with serifs and coat of arms below with pelican pecking its breast. Verse 'When I consider'd new Jerusalem Wherem's reserv'd my Crown my diadem Oh then I Long'd the same for to enjoy And leave this world which doth my peace anoy I come dear Lord the floods here rise These troubled seas some nought but mire My soul unto her Saviour flies Farewell false world Heaven's my desire'.
