Description
The Woodlands is a house located on Church Parade in Brislington, Bristol. It dates from the mid 18th century to the early 19th century and features a combination of stucco and brick with pantile roofs on the hip and gable sections, while the old coach house has a slate roof. The building is L-shaped, with a right-hand wing at the back that includes a cross wing at the angle with the main house, and an attached coach house to the left.
The house is designed in a late Georgian style and stands two storeys tall with a four-window range. The front block, which is from the early 19th century, is asymmetrical and has a rusticated ground floor, a sill band, a cornice, and a coped parapet. The entrance features a six-panel door with a fanlight, located in the second bay from the left, along with plate-glass sash windows. A late 19th-century porch with fluted piers, stained-glass windows, and barge-boards enhances the entrance.
The right-hand elevation is divided into three sections: the first is blank, the middle section has a three-window range of 6/6-pane sashes beneath a cornice, and the rear section slightly projects with a two-window range of smaller 6/6-pane sashes that have thick bars. The left side elevation has scattered fenestration, including a semicircular-arched 6/4-pane stair sash with interlacing bars in the front block, as well as entrances to flats.
Inside, the building has been significantly altered during its conversion. Historically, the rear block served as the George Inn in the 18th century, facing Church School Road, which was part of the pilgrim route to St Anne's Convent.
