Description

This is a two-storey and attic office building, dated 1875, designed by JH Hirst. It is located on the east side of St Stephen’s Street, in Bristol. The building is constructed of grey and red granite, with limestone ashlar detailing, and has ashlar gable stacks. It follows a double-depth plan and features an eclectic architectural style combining Baroque and Venetian Gothic Revival elements.

The symmetrical front has two-storey semicircular arches, set on a grey granite plinth and featuring red granite giant Composite columns with square responds. Above the arches is an entablature with moulded architraves and panelled keys with guilloche. A modillion cornice runs along the top. The walls behind the arches feature alternating vermiculated bands. The tall attic storey has banded pilasters with crocketed capitals, a heavy bracketed cornice, a central pediment flanked by balustrades, and four flaming urns positioned above. Segmental-arched ground-floor windows are detailed with keys and carved spandrels, with a deep bowed sill above, and acroteria above the arches and keys. The doorway on the right has pilaster jambs, a lintel, and a six-panel door, with steps leading up to a left-of-centre doorway. Second-floor windows are also semicircular-arched and keyed, with granite shafts supporting paired semicircular-arched windows and a round window above. A cartouche is set within the tympanum, and an acroterion sits above the pediment. Shouldered basement windows are also present. The interior of the building was not inspected.

Attached to the ground-floor windows are cast-iron railings with parallel bars. Curved railings and two lamp standards, each fitted with a globe lamp, are located at the middle doorway.
