Description

The Bristol High Cross, located in the east corner of Berkeley Square gardens, is a high cross built in 1851 by John Norton, with carving by Harry Hems of Exeter. It is made of limestone ashlar and features a plinth adorned with four statues of seated monarchs, each under canted hoods with ogee finials. There are pinnacles between the statues and a square spirelet with crocketed ribs and a foliate finial. The original cross was carved in 1373 and was moved to College Green in 1733, then to Stourhead in 1768, where it remains today. The replacement cross, which originally had seven statues, stood on College Green until it was replaced by the statue of Queen Victoria. The truncated cross was relocated to Berkeley Square in 1950.
