Description

Numbers 9 and 10 are a pair of attached houses, now used as offices, located in Berkeley Square, Bristol. They were built in 1912 by John Bevan the Younger and are designed in the Edwardian Baroque style. The buildings are constructed of limestone ashlar with party wall stacks and a slate hipped roof. They have a double-depth plan and rise three storeys above a basement, featuring a seven-window range.

The symmetrical front has a layout of three windows, one window, and three windows, with pilasters on the sides and a pedimented center. The ground floor is rusticated and includes a plat band, frieze, cornice, and balustrade. A large semicircular-arched doorway is flanked by a coved surround and features a large key to a tripartite niche under a segmental hood, with a cartouche and festoon above. The doorways are recessed and there is a shallow portico supported by paired Ionic columns on pedestals, topped with a pediment.

The ground-floor windows are designed with keys, resembling those on Berkeley Square terraces, while the first-floor windows have keyed architraves with shoulders and triple keys on each side, a keyed oculus in the center, and plain second-floor windows with an eared architrave on the central window. The windows are fitted with plate-glass casements. The property also features attached cast-iron railings and gates in front of the basement areas, along with steps leading to the doorway. The interior has not been inspected.
