Description

Albert Lodge is a house dating to circa 1850, possibly designed by J Marmont. It is constructed of limestone ashlar with gable stacks and a slate cross-gabled roof. The building is of a double-depth plan and is in the Italianate style. It is two storeys high, with a two-window range. The right-hand sections have pediments projecting to three elevations. The facade features tooled, rusticated quoins, a banded ground floor up to a plat band, an inscription reading "ALBERT LODGE", a thin upper string, and a dentil cornice leading to timber modillion eaves and pediments with oculus windows. The central entrance on the left return is framed by an architrave and console cornice, surmounted by a 19th-century tented canopy over a panelled door with roundels and a leaded overlight. A left-hand canted bay has a console cornice, and there are two 6/6-pane sash windows above. There are blind windows on the right-hand side and a stack above the pediment. The front of the house has a right-hand bay featuring tripartite semicircular-arched windows with faceted keys, topped by a segmental pediment. Paired ground-floor windows have a console cornice, and the first-floor windows have eared and shouldered semicircular arches with keys. The windows are plate-glass sashes. The interior has not been inspected. Attached to the front are stone piers, cast-iron railings, and gates. The lodge was likely designed as an accompaniment to the Royal Promenade, sharing several details with it.
