Description

Ashton Gate Junior School Infant Block is a junior school, formerly a board school, built around 1895. It is constructed from squared, snecked Pennant rubble with limestone ashlar dressings, and features double Roman, plain, and decorative ridge tiles. The building has a symmetrical design with classrooms on either side of a central hall, showcasing a Free Gothic style. It is a single storey with an attic, and the side facing Ashton Gate Road has a five-gable range. The end gables include three ground-floor windows with two lights and trefoil heads, along with attic dormers. The middle bays feature wide hoods that contain four-light mullioned windows with trefoil heads and a rose window above, made up of seven circular lights, with finials on the gables. The opposite elevation displays three gables flanked by a deep hip that ends in a flat roof. The gable ends have wide two-centred relieving arches over four-light windows with king mullions, also topped with finials. Three lanterns are positioned on the ridge where the gables intersect. The interior consists of a central full-length hall with classrooms on each side and an end stair. The building is complemented by iron railings on dwarf walls along Ashton Gate Road.
