Description

The Lock Keeper's House at Netham Locks is a cottage built around 1809. It is constructed of squared, uncoursed Pennant rubble with a brick eaves stack and a slate roof. The building has two storeys and features a two-window range on the south elevation. Notable architectural details include decorative barge-boards with finials at the gable ends. Access to the first floor is via a doorway from the road, which has a four-panel door and a cast-iron plaque above it inscribed with "BUILDING 1/ BRISTOL DOCKS." There is also a ground-floor door at the rear. The windows are two-light plate-glass sashes with jambs. Inside, the layout includes a lobby with a glazed screen, a washstand, a plain fireplace, and a store on the ground floor. Netham Lock serves as the upstream entrance to the Feeder Canal and the Floating Harbour, which was designed and built by William Jessop between 1804 and 1809.
