Description
This is a terrace of ten houses built in 1787 by Thomas Paty. The houses are constructed of brick with limestone dressings, featuring party wall stacks and a pantile mansard roof. They are designed in the late Georgian style and consist of three storeys, an attic, and a double basement, with a three-window range for each house. The terrace has a regular stepped appearance, with pilasters supporting overlapping cornices and a parapet, as well as a first-floor sill band.
The left-hand doorways, with the right-hand one leading to No. 1, have semicircular arches and bracketed pediments, metal fanlights, and six-panel doors. Nos. 8 and 10 feature six-over-six pane sashes in their doorways. Canted ground-floor oriels are present on Nos. 3, 4, and 7 to 10, with pilaster jambs supporting their cornices. The windows have cambered heads with five stepped voussoirs and six-over-six pane sashes. The dormers on Nos. 7 to 10 have been restored in the 20th century and are wide with four casements.
The right-hand return of the terrace consists of three storeys and three basements, with a three-window range that is blind on the upper three windows, featuring stepped voussoirs. Inside, most of the houses have been extensively modernised and interconnected. However, there is an original entrance hall with a panelled semicircular arch leading to a rear dogleg stair with stick balusters and column newels, as well as fireplaces, panelled shutters, and six-panel doors.
Additionally, there are attached wrought-iron railings and gates with urn finials in the basement area. This design is a standard one by Thomas Paty, also seen in Berkeley Square and other locations.
