Description

This is a mid-18th century house, built between 1763 and 1764 by Benjamin Probert and Robert Comfort, designed in the style of Thomas Paty. It is located on Hotwell Road, in the Hotwells area of Bristol. The house is constructed of red brick with limestone dressings, a brick party wall, and a pantile double-depth roof. It has a double-depth plan and a mid-Georgian style, arranged over three storeys, an attic, and a basement. The two-window front is articulated by rusticated pilaster strips to a moulded coping. The right-hand doorway features a bracketed pediment over a Gibbs surround with split key stones and angled voussoirs. Above the door is a rectangular overlight with a fanlight featuring two oval panes within metalwork. The door itself is made up of six panels. The ground floor windows are set to the left of the entrance and have five stepped voussoirs to the 2/2-pane sashes in flush frames. First-floor windows are full-depth 4/4-pane sashes, and these are accompanied by cast-iron lattice basket balconies. There is a hipped dormer in the attic. Steps lead down to open basement areas, which contain arched cellars beneath a deep flagged pavement. The rear elevation includes a full-height hipped projection and a semicircular-arched stair light. The interior has not been inspected. Attached to the front and basement area are cast-iron railings and capped piers.
