Description

No. 299 Dowry Parade is an attached house built between 1763 and 1764 by Benjamin Probert and Robert Comfort, designed in the style of Thomas Paty. The house is constructed of red brick with limestone dressings, featuring brick party wall stacks and a double-depth pantile roof. It is designed in the mid-Georgian style and consists of three storeys, an attic, and a basement, with a two-window range. The façade is articulated by rusticated pilaster strips leading to a moulded coping.

The left-hand doorway is framed by a Gibbs surround with a bracketed pediment, featuring a split key and separate angled voussoirs, and includes a rectangular overlight with a lozenge-shaped metal fanlight above a six-panel door. To the right of the entrance, the windows have five stepped voussoirs and consist of 6/6-pane sashes in flush frames, with a hipped dormer above. There are steps leading down to open basement areas, with arched cellars beneath the deep flagged pavement. The rear elevation features a full-height hipped projection and a semicircular-arched stair light.

Inside, the entrance hall is divided by panelled pilasters leading to a semicircular arch. There is a rear dogleg stair with an uncut string, column-on-vase balusters, column newels, and a moulded rail. The ground floor includes an eared marble fire surround, modillion cornices, six-panel doors, and panelled shutters. The property also features attached front basement area cast-iron railings and gates with urn finials.
