Description
19 and 21 Sydenham Hill are a pair of attached houses built in 1879, designed in the Italianate style. They are constructed from limestone ashlar and feature a double-depth plan. The houses are two storeys high with a basement and have a symmetrical façade that includes clasping giant pilasters supporting a frieze, cornice, and parapet, along with a banded ground floor.
The central section has a wide full-height bow with Ionic columns flanking two doorways on either side of the party wall. The left-hand doorway leads to a half-glazed 20th-century door. The windows are set in shallow recesses, with the outer first-floor windows featuring bracketed canopies and curved brackets supporting balconies with wrought-iron railings. The two windows on the bow have panelled aprons and small cornices. The end houses have 6/6-pane sash windows with margin bars, while the center house has 2/2-pane sashes.
Inside No. 19, there is a hall that includes a flight of stairs with stick balusters and fluted newels, cornices, four-panel doors, and panelled shutters.
