Description

This is a three-storey, attic, and basement terrace house dating from 1770 to 1775, designed by John Wood the Younger, with 20th-century additions. It is located on Rivers Street in Bath.

The front of the building is faced with limestone ashlar, while the plinth to the basement is of rubble stone. The rear features a mix of ashlar and rubble. It has a double-pile roof covered in Welsh slate and is topped with a parapet to the front and two ashlar stacks, partially brick, to the front, with a staircase to the rear.

The two-window front has paired nine/nine-sash windows on the first floor, set in splayed reveals and incorporating a continuous wrought-iron balconette. The second floor has paired six/six-paned, horned sashes with plain reveals and continuous stone sills. The ground floor mirrors the first, with a six-panel door, having a flush moulded fielded panel and single glazed panel, set within a pedimented Doric doorcase, and two steps leading to a pennant-paved crossover. Basement windows are six/six-sashes in plain reveals with stone sills, alongside a panelled door beneath the crossover, with 20th-century steps providing access. There is one 20th-century dormer window with casement windows. A band course runs above the ground floor, topped by a modillion cornice and coped parapet. The rear elevation has horned glazing bar sashes, a 20th-century dormer and rooflight, and a cantilevered ashlar lavatory extension to the second-floor half-landing.

The interior has not been inspected.

Attached to the house are wrought iron railings and a gate with shaped heads on limestone bases.

Rivers Street was developed by John Wood the Younger across multiple parcels of land held on various leasehold and freehold arrangements. Building leases and rate books indicate several different builders were involved in implementing Wood's design.
