Description

This is a three-story, attic, and basement terrace house, now converted into flats, dating from 1770 to 1775. It was designed by John Wood the Younger and extends slightly forward to form the front of Catharine Place, alongside numbers 5 and 6 River Street.

The front of the house is constructed of limestone ashlar, with ashlar and rubble to the rear. It features a mansard roof covered with Welsh slate, and a coped party wall with two ashlar stacks on the right side. The first floor has a Venetian window with six/six and nine/nine pane horned sashes in splayed reveals, a lowered continuous stone sill, and a wrought iron balconette. The second floor has three grouped four/four and six/six pane horned sashes, narrower to the left and right, with plain reveals and a continuous stone sill. The ground floor has a pair of nine/nine pane horned sashes to the right and a six-panel door with reeded, fielded, and glazed panels set within a pedimented Doric doorcase. The basement has two six/six pane horned sashes, a 20th-century door, and steps leading to a concreted crossover. A 20th-century triple dormer with metal casement windows is located in the attic. A band course runs above the ground floor, and a modillion cornice and coped parapet continue with numbers 5 and 6 River Street. The rear elevation has 20th-century metal casement windows. The interior has not been inspected. Attached wrought iron railings and a gate, with shaped heads on painted limestone bases, complete the exterior.

Rivers Street was developed by John Wood the Younger on several plots of land, with different builders implementing his overall design. Historical records include building leases and rate books.
