Description

This is a three-storey terrace house with an attic and basement, originally built around 1775 by John Wood the Younger. It was destroyed by bombing in 1942 and subsequently rebuilt as a replica by Mowbray Green.

The building is constructed of limestone ashlar, with a Welsh slate, parapeted mansard roof and a coped party wall. It has an ashlar stack to the right. The front elevation features a band course continuous with numbers 1 and 1A Rivers Street, a modillion cornice, and a coped parapet continuous with numbers 1-4 Rivers Street. The first floor has three grouped six/six, nine/nine, and six/six horned sash windows with plain reveals and continuous stone sills. The second floor has similar four/four, six/six, and four/four sashes. The ground floor includes two six/six horned sashes to the right, and a six-panel door recessed within a pedimented Doric doorcase, approached by two concrete steps. The basement has two six/six horned sashes and a six-panel door under the crossover, with concrete area steps. A triple dormer is visible at the attic level, housing four/four, six/six, and four/four horned sashes. The rear elevation is in a similar style.

The interior has not been inspected.

Attached to the front are railings and a gate with shaped heads on limestone bases.

Rivers Street was developed by John Wood the Younger in three sections. Numbers 1-11 were constructed alongside Catherine Place on land conveyed on perpetual leasehold. Numbers 16-28 and 36-47 were built on land conveyed from the Rivers Estate. Numbers 28-35 were constructed alongside Russell Street on land bought from Thomas and Daniel Omer. A strip of land used to build numbers 12-15 and 48-50 was likely not acquired by Wood. Multiple Bath builders were involved in implementing Wood's design.
