Description

The lodge with attached walls, gate-piers, and gates to Kingswood School was built around 1860 by James Wilson, with the walls, gate-piers, and gates forming a First World War memorial gateway added around 1920.

The lodge is constructed from limestone ashlar and features a Welsh slate roof. It has a double depth plan and stands two storeys high with a single window bay, designed in a Tudor Gothic style. The front elevation includes a canted bay with a stone mullioned window that has a configuration of 1:2:1 lights, each divided into four panes. To the left, there is a Tudor arch door in a lean-to extension, above which is a two-light stone mullioned window in a recessed frame, again with four panes in each light. The gable has double kneelers, moulded coping, and a moulded finial. The street elevation features a projecting stack with a set-off, weathering, and a double shaft set on diamond and castellated caps. To the right of the stack, there is a plinth below a three-pane window in a recessed frame, and another window above it with four panes. The gable on this side has a single kneeler, moulded coping, and a cross finial. A castellated wall adjoins the lodge on the right side.

The war memorial gateway consists of wrought-iron double gates designed in an elaborate 18th-century style, featuring an overthrow with the school crest. This is flanked by panelled piers with cornices and large acorn finials, which are further flanked by single gates and smaller plain piers. The lower wing wall connects to the lodge.

The lodge, along with its attached walls, gate-piers, and gates, enhances the overall appearance of the main school buildings and holds significant group value with them.
