Description
The remains of the basin at the bottom of the inclined plane are located 20 yards east of Inner Meadow Cottage. This structure dates from around 1801 and was built for the Somerset Coal Canal. The canal basin features ashlar retaining walls that are approximately 3 feet high on the north and west sides and 4 feet high on the south side. The north and south walls each extend about 60 yards in length. This basin and the inclined plane that ascends the hill to the west represent the second attempt to manage the change in level on this branch of the canal.
