Description

9-10 Cheap Street is a three-storey, three-bay building dating from the 18th century, constructed of limestone ashlar with a Welsh slate roof. The building occupies an enclosed site and has a single-depth plan, with windows primarily facing the front except for those on the upper floors.

The front elevation features original shop fronts on the ground floor, including a central entrance flanked by display windows. A fascia with small square panes sits above the shop fronts. The bays are defined by blocked pilasters supporting a continuous cornice. The first floor has large, segmental-headed windows with drip mouldings and keyed heads. These are five-light windows with mullions and transoms, the centre light being wider with a higher transom. Arched panels between the windows support narrow, giant pilasters. Plain, wider pilasters are located at either end of the front. A sill band runs along the second floor; the outer bays have single-light windows flanking a two-light window, while the centre bay has a five-light window, all with transoms and raised architraves. Each window below the transom contains a plain sash. On the third floor are paired plain sashes, each with a central mullion and an apron with a raised surround below. A dentil cornice tops the building, followed by a parapet and a mansard roof with four flat-topped dormers containing two-over-two sash windows. The roofline has been altered from its original gabled form, as documented in a photograph published in the Bath Graphic in May 1896.

The interior of the building has not been inspected.
