Description
Rebekah Fountain is a statue dating from 1859 and was erected in 1861. It is made of white marble and grey pennant stone. The plinth consists of two eight-sided pennant steps topped with a third circular step. The statue features a circular pennant base with an inscription band that reads "WATER IS BEST" on the front and "Presented by Bath Temperance Association June 8th 1861" on the rear, along with a foliate frieze above. The white marble statue depicts a draped classical female figure, "Rebecca at the well." The well is designed as a basin supported by an arcade of four circular piers, resembling a church font. It stands on rusticated piers that rest on a circular base shaped like a rock outcrop. This fountain is part of the first wave of public drinking fountains and is contemporary with another fountain in Walcot Street. The classical style of the statue was unusual for its time and makes a clear reference to the Roman Baths. The inscription on the fountain is a repetition of the Greek inscription found on the front of the Pump Rooms.
