Description
No. 21 Vineyards is a house and shop built in the late 18th century, with some additions from the 19th century. It is constructed from limestone ashlar, and the roof is not visible from the street. The building sits on a very shallow, wedge-shaped site and has a double fronted, single depth plan.
The exterior features two storeys and a full-height attic, which may have been added later. The ground floor includes a late 19th-century shop with a central doorway and plate glass windows on either side. There is a plain modern door and another similar door to the left. Above the window fascias is a platband, and there is a sill band at the first floor level. The first floor has a four-over-one sash window to the left, with the other windows being plain, all equipped with iron balconettes. The second floor features plain six-over-six sash windows, with an additional four-over-four window on the narrow end elevation. There is a cornice, and the second floor has six-over-six sashes flanking a blind window. The building has a parapet and an ashlar stack with pots on the right side. The rear elevation has not been seen.
Historically, No. 21 is first shown on Harcourt Masters's map from 1793. It was built alongside Nos. 22 and 23, which have since undergone significant changes and are now listed separately.
